Problem

STATUS CODE 5: When using Veritas NetBackup (tm) 6.0, Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) restores fail with Status 5 if the NetBackup 6.0 Language Pack is installed.

Error Message

EXIT STATUS 5: the restore failed to recover the requested files.

Solution

Overview:
If NetBackup 6.0 Simplified ChineseLanguage Pack or Japanese Language Pack is installed to the NetBackup 6.0server, NDMP restore jobs will fail with Status 5 "the restore failed to recoverthe requested files".

NetBackup 6.0 uses VxUL (Veritas Unified Logging)for logging. VxUL version 1.2.12 is bundled to NBU 6.0GA and MP1. VxUL version1.2.13 is bundled to NetBackup 6.0 MP2 and later.  These two versions ofVxUL cause a problem to load translated NDMP Agent messages from the localizedmessage resource file during NDMP restores.

You can determine the versionof VxUL currently installed in your system from the file property of NetBackup\bin\vxul.dll.

Workaround:
Please rename thefollowing files to disable localized messages regarding NetBackup forNDMP:

1. Stop all NetBackup services on the NetBackup masterserver.
2. Find the following file on the NetBackup master server.
  • NetBackup\resources\ndmpagentZH.dll(if NetBackup 6.0 Simplified Chinese Language Pack is installed)
  • NetBackup\resources\ndmpagentJA.dll(if NetBackup 6.0 Japanese Language Pack isinstalled)
3. Rename it, for example, ndmpagentZH.dll.back.
4. Start all NetBackup services previouslystopped.
5. Restore NDMP backups.

Log Files:
The View Statusscreen on Backup, Archive and Restore shows Error (5).

Resolution:
Until NetBackup 6.0 replaces the currentversion of VxUL with VxUL 1.4.3 and later, the workaround mentioned above isrequired. Currently, Veritas is planning to bundle VxUL 1.4.3 for the NetBackup6.0 Maintenance Pack 5 (MP5) release.
