Problem

The Enterprise Vault Storage Verify and Repair (EVSVR) ItemCounts operation is used to address any inconsistencies which may exist for the Number of Archived Items and Archive Size of Archives. This issue would cause the Total Items and Size of Archives to be decremented twice when archived items are manually deleted as well as leaving behind orphan dumpster records in the JournalDelete table. After a while, this can result into negative values for the Total Items and Size of Archives.

The inconsistencies might go unnoticed until the Total Items and Size become negative and this can be seen ,for example, in the Enterprise Vault Usage Report. This report will show a negative count in Total Items and Total Size for one or more archives. The fields affected are the ArchivedItems and ArchivedSize columns in the ArchivePoint and Vault tables located in the Vault Store databases.

An EVSVR Repair ItemCounts operation will incorrectly repair the Total Items and Size of Archives if orphaned items exist in the JournalDelete SQL table. In some instances this incorrectly sets negative values in those referenced fields.

Error Message

There are no errors logged. An EVSVR ItemCount verify operation will look like this:

Verification Failed: 1D2FB007F0C3A764AAB11B155DDB32D551110000evserver1: Identity: 3
Items: 1: Items from Saveset records: -4
Items Size (KiB): 2: Items Size (KiB) from Saveset records: -88

Items: 1 is the actual number of records in the ArchivedItems field in the database.

Items from Saveset records: -4 is the number of records that EVSVR counted in the database. Note that the value is a negative number four.

Cause

These inconsistencies may originate from a legacy issue in EV which was resolved in EV version 11.0.1. This issue would cause the Total Items and Size of Archives to be decremented twice when archived items are manually deleted. It would also leave behind orphaned dumpster records in the JournalDelete SQL table.
