Problem

If the Storage Foundation For Windows Volume Replicator (VVR) option is installed then the Veritas Storage Agent Service (VxVM) can terminate unexpectedly if the Vras module receives an unexpectedly large packet.

This can happen even if no Replicated Data Sets are configured or online on the node at the time.

Error Message

EventID 7031 - The Veritas Storage Agent Service terminated unexpectedly.

Vradmin.log - IpmHandle::recv The received message does not specify a valid field size. Marking as bad the ipm <X>

Cause

The mal-formed packet is initially handled correctly and discarded, but a cleanup procedure can cause a heap corruption crash in the VxVM process.

Solution

This fix post-dates the final Cumulative Patch release for Storage Foundation 5.1 Service Pack 2.  An additional fix has been made available here: https://sort.Veritas.com/patch/detail/8852.

For versions earlier than 5.1 Service Pack, please upgrade to 5.1 Service Pack 2 (or later) to obtain this patch.
