Problem

The "Snapshot" parent job will complete and hand off to the "Backup" child job. The backup/child job will then fail immediately (no data transferred) with a Status 6 in the Activity Monitor of the Administration Console. The Detailed Status tab for the failed job will show ERR - Error opening the snapshot disks using given transport mode: Status 23.

Error Message

Job Details:
Error bpbrm (pid=####) from client vmclient01: ERR - Error opening the snapshot disks using given transport mode: Status 23

VXMS logging will show the following when trying to access the snapshot:
11:23:41.0159 : g_vixInterfaceLogger:libvix.cpp:1829 <DEBUG> : [VFM_ESWARN] VixDiskLibVim: Not licensed to use this function.

Cause

Upgrading to appliance code 2.5.4/2.6.0.1 or NetBackup version 7.5.0.7/7.6 GA includes the newest VDDK version 5.1 Update 1 from VMware. This VDDK version requires slightly different datastore level permissions for our NetBackup credential account in vCenter. If the credential role is not already an admin in vCenter and is set granularly (or with a stock VCB role), backups for the virtual clients will begin to fail with a Status 6 (Status 23 inside the Detailed Status).

In rare instances, even a credentialed account already set to an admin role will exhibit this issue.

Solution

Set the credential account in vCenter to an admin role or with the newest granular permissions required by VMware. The newest required granular permissions can be found in the Related Article linked below.

See the below VMware KB for details about the change in the behavior:

Restore or backup of virtual machines using VDDK API fails with the error: Not licensed to use this function. Error 16064 at 2357 (2063054)
