Problem

When stopping the vxvm service, an error occurs that Windows could not stop it.

When installing a hotfix that stops the vxvm service during the pre-install tasks, an installer error occurs that the wizard failed to install the hotfix.

Error Message

The following error occurs when stopping the service manually (Figure 1):

Windows could not stop the Veritas Storage Agent service on Local Computer.

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

The following error occurs when installing a hotfix that stops the vxvm service during the pre-install tasks (Figure 2):

The wizard failed to install the hotfix on the node. Please see the log file for details.

Cause

While stopping the vxvm service, iSCSI and Scheduler providers perform certain operations which result in a failure to stop the service in a timely fashion.

Solution

A public fix (sfw-Hotfix_5_1_20012_88_2087139) is available from Veritas Enterprise Technical Support. The public fix has been made publicly available at: https://sort.Veritas.com/patch/detail/4728.
This fix specifically addresses the problem identified above. It has not been fully tested and should be applied in a test environment before placing into production. If the systems are not critically impaired, it is recommended to delay the installation of this private fix until the next scheduled maintenance release. Before applying this private fix, systems may be required to be upgraded.
 

Applies To

This patch is specific to Storage Foundation for Windows 5.1 SP2 and Storage Foundation High Availability for Windows 5.1 SP2 with Windows 2003 and 2008.

This note is applicable only for Windows Server 2003.

This hotfix requires Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0 pre-installed in your setup. Download and install MSXML 6.0 before installing the hotfix.
