Statement of support for the importing of Backup Exec images in NetBackup 7.x using the Backup Exec Tape Reader

Solution

Backup Exec Tape Reader (BETR) refers to the ability within NetBackup to import and restore from Backup Exec (BE) backup sets (images).  Backup Exec media is imported into the NetBackup media server and data from the BE backup sets can be restored via NetBackup.  This statement specifies the current level of support for the Backup Exec Tape Reader capability.

Windows Server images

  • Recover files from full, incremental and differential backups
  • NetBackup 7.x supports Windows Server 2003 & 2008 images
  • NetBackup 7.x supports images from Backup Exec 7 through 12
  • NetBackup 7.x supports recovery of System State & Shadow Copy Components
  • NetBackup 7.x supports compressed images
Exchange Server images
  • NetBackup 7.x supports Exchange 2000 & 2003 images from Backup Exec 9.1 through 12
  • NetBackup 7.x supports Exchange 2007 images from Backup Exec 11 through 12
  • Recover databases from full, incremental, differential and copy backup images

The following functionality is not available for Backup Exec images from Exchange 2003 & 2007:

  • Restoring individual mailbox objects or public folder objects either to the same path or different path.
  • Restoring to a different storage group other than the Recovery Storage Group (other than the Recovery Storage Group with Exchange 2007)
  • Redirecting a storage group to a different client (other than a Recovery Storage Group with Exchange 2007)
The support for Backup Exec images of Exchange 2007 is limited to recovering the backup image to the same storage group or the Recovery Storage Group (same client or alternate client). This is supported for both VSS backups as well as non-VSS backups.

SQL Server images
  • NetBackup 7.x supports SQL Server 2005 images from Backup Exec 9.1 through 12
  • Recover databases from full, incremental, differential and transaction log backups
Limitations
These limitations apply in all cases, unless otherwise noted above:
  • Veritas' intent is to support a select subset Windows images
  • Veritas does not intend to comprehensively support all BE images
  • Support is limited to images residing on tape media supported by the NetBackup media server
  • Disk backups are not supported
  • Encrypted images are not supported
  • Duplication after import is not supported
  • Other restrictions may apply
Future Plans
There are no plans to improve or expand coverage beyond the current capabilities, nor support any images after Backup Exec 12.  (There is no support for Backup Exec 12.5 images or later image versions.)

NetBackup 7.6 will be the last release to support BETR functionality.
