Storage lifecycle policies are not supported in policies that use the multiple copy synthetic backups method

Problem

The multiple copy synthetic backups method allows NetBackup to produce a second copy of a synthetic backup at a remote site as part of a normal synthetic backup job. Although synthetic backups do support the use of storage lifecycle policies, SLPs cannot be used for the multiple copy synthetic backups method.

Error Message

Beginning in 7.6.0.3, if multiple copy synthetic backups are configured:

• If the user runs SLP validation, the validation alerts the user that this configuration is unsupported.
• NetBackup creates the synthetic backup and writes it to the backup destination as specified in the SLP. However, NetBackup ignores the information in the multi_synth.policy.schedule configuration file and does not create additional copies as specified in the file. The Job Details indicate that the additional synthetic backups were ignored.

Solution

• Remove storage lifecycle policies from backup policies configured for multiple copy synthetic backups.
• Remove the multi_synth.policy.schedule configuration file for any schedule that uses an SLP.
