Problem

Jobs with only the SAN transport mode specified fail to open virtual disks on vSphere 6.5 VMFS6 datastores.

Error Message

V-79-57344-38277 - Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine

UMI Code: V-79-57344-38277

Cause

Backup Exec 16  and Backup Exec 16 Feature Pack 1 use the VMware VDDK 6.0U2 to support backup and restore of virtual disks (VMDKs) in vSphere 6.5. VDDK 6.0U2 does not support the SAN transport mode with new VMFS6 file system.

By default, a Backup Exec job includes the full set of transport modes for the VDDK. The VDDK will work its way down the specified transport modes list until it can successfully open a VMDK. If none of the specified transport modes work, the VDDK will return an error and the job will fail. However, if the user specifies only the SAN transport mode, and if the VM has any disks on a VMFS6 datastore, the job will fail with error “V-79-57344-38277 - Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine."

Solution

To support the SAN transport mode with VMFS6, please update to Backup Exec 16 Feature Pack 2 or later. Backup Exec 16 Feature Pack 2 uses VDDK 6.5.

When backing up or restoring on Backup Exec 16 or Backup Exec 16 Feature Pack 1, please enable one or more other transport modes in the options of the backup or restore job for a VM with virtual disks on a VMFS6 datastore.
