Problem

How to create checkpoint in Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows. Volume Replicator Option.

Solution

When replication is completely stopped and restarted, a full resynchronization is normally required. A checkpoint may be used to to create a marker in the replicator log (SRL) that allows replication to restart from the "marked" position. When replication is restarted from a checkpoint, only writes that occurred after the checkpoint was created will need to be replicated. This is useful for situations where a large amount of time will be required to complete a full resynchronization.

Warning: Follow these steps only if there are no blocks pending. Do not attempt to stop and restart replication  from a checkpoint if there were blocks pending at the time that the checkpoint operation was performed. This  will result in an invalid checkpoint and will require a full resynchronization to correct.

To verify that the secondary rlink it up-to-date, perform the following steps:

1. Stop any applications or processes that are using the volumes that are being replicated.
2. Disable access to the volumes.
  • From VEA (Veritas Enterprise Administrator), expand Replication Network.
  • Expand the RDS (Replicated Data Set).
  • Expand the primary RVG.
  • Right-click on the replicated volume(s). Select Disable Data Access.
3. From Replication Monitor, verify that no blocks are pending. Alternatively, vxrlink may be run from a command  prompt.

Vxrlink syntax:

Vxrlink -g diskgroup -r rvg -I 5 status [rlink on primary]

Note: Since the SRL is a "circular" log, a checkpoint will eventually be overwritten. The amount of time that this takes depends on the size of the SRL and the amount of transactions that are being logged.

1. From VEA (Veritas Enterprise Administrator), expand Replication Network.
2. Expand the RDS (Replicated Data Set).
3. Right-click on the primary RVG (Replicated Volume Group). Click Start Checkpoint.
4. From Checkpoint, enter the name of the checkpoint that is to be created. The checkpoint can be any valid  alpha-numeric name.

Note: The RVG status should now change to reflect the checkpoint status.

5. Right-click on the primary RVG. Select End Checkpoint.

Note: The checkpoint can be ended immediately after it is started. It is not necessary to allow the checkpoint  to run for an extended length of time.

The checkpoint will now be available as a selection in the event that replication is stopped and restarted.
