Problem

A SQL database restore fails with this error when a differential backup has been selected for restore and there is no full backup available.

Error Message

V-79-65323-3118 - The database "database" does not exist. RESTORE can only create a database when restoring either a full backup or a file backup of the primary file.

Solution

Microsoft does not support the restore of differential data to a SQL server without the accompanying full backup.

If the full backup is available of the desired database, restore the full backup before attempting to restore the differential.

If no full backups of the database can be found, then the data cannot be restored.
