Problem

Optimized duplication jobs saturate a site-to-site WAN link, causing other applications to lose connectivity.

Solution

Reduce the bandwidth used by Optimized Duplication

There is a setting in the pd.conf file (Default location: C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\pd.conf) that can be used to limit the bandwidth used during an optimized duplication operation.

This is the OPTDUP_BANDWIDTH setting.

The default setting is OPTDUP_BANDWIDTH = 0 which means do not limit the bandwidth.
This setting is in KB/s.
Setting this to a non-zero value will reduce the bandwidth used by optimized duplication jobs at the expense of time, meaning the job will run slower and will take longer.

This change needs to be made in the pd.conf file located on the server that is performing the optimized duplication operation job.

To enable this setting, perform the following steps:

  1. Remove the pound symbol (#)  preceding each of the following line:
    • OPTDUP_BANDWIDTH = 0
  1. Set the OPTDUP_BANDWIDTH value in KB/Sec. Example 1024 for 1MB/Sec

  2. Save the file as pd.conf
