"Error 1327 Invalid Drive: X:\ " where "X" refers to a mapped drive, occurs when attempting a System Recovery uninstall /reinstall.

Problem

When attempting an uninstall or reinstall of Veritas System Recovery (VSR) the attempt fails with an "Invalid drive" error.  Rebooting and trying the attempt again generates the same error.

Error Message

Error 1327 - Invalid drive X:\

(where "X" is the name of a mapped drive on the system or a Temp drive)

Cause

This is caused by an InstallShield error common to all applications that use this installation API.

Solution

If X: is a mapped drive to resolve the error, temporarily unmap the drive mentioned in the error and reattempt the uninstall / reinstall. The mapping can be safely recreated afterwards. If X: is a Temp dirve following these steps:

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

1.       Back up your Registry.

2.       Go to Start > Search > and then type Regedit.

3.       Navigate to the following folder: 

          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

4.       In the right panel, search for entries that list the drive letter referenced in the error message. 

5.       Modify the value of those entries to to point to C:\ drive and verify that the folder path referenced in the key value exists.

6.       Repeat the same steps for the following key: 
          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
