Description

The following steps describe a method for NetBackup backing up SharePoint in a VMware environment so that users will be able to perform 4 types of restores from a single backup --VM restore, single file restore (V-Ray), SharePoint database restore and granular file restore (GRT).

  1. Ensure the NetBackup Client software and the Veritas VSS Provider are installed on all virtual machines, and that the logon account used in the NetBackup Client Service is configured to use a valid Windows account, not the Local System account.

  2. Launch the NetBackup Admin console and navigate to Host Properties:
    • Go to Host Properties -> Master Server to add the Vmware Access Hosts and Distributed Application Restore Mapping.
    • Go to Host Properties->Clients, click the Windows Clients node, fill in Exchange granular restore proxy host at "Exchange." The Exchange granular restore proxy host is the host that SQL Server installed.
    • Go to Host Properties->Clients, click the Windows Clients node and enter the SharePoint credentials at "SharePoint".

  3. Navigate to Media and Device Management->Credentials->Virtual Machine Servers, and add a VMware ESX server or Virtual Center Server.

  4. Create a new policy with the following properties:
    • change the Policy Type to VMware
    • select a disk-type Storage Unit
    • define a Full schedule
    • make a query to include the virtual machines that installed SQL Server and/or SharePoint Server
    • keep the default backup selections
    • at the VMware tag, make sure "Enable SharePoint Recovery" option is checked

  5. Run this policy; the backup job should complete successfully with a 0 status.

  6. To configure a restore operation, launch the Backup, Archive and Restore (BAR) program and specify one of the following policy:
    • to perform a VM or single file restore, change the policy type to VMware
    • to perform SharePoint database or single file restore in the SharePoint web application, change the policy type to SharePoint

Please note:

  • The Client for NFS is required on all machines.
  • VMware Tools is also required on all of the virtual machines.
  • For supported VMware, SharePoint, SQL and OS versions, please see the latest NetBackup compatibility lists.
