Problem

Can NetBackup backup the contents of the Oracle Automatic  Storage Management (ASM)?

Solution

ASM support with Netbackup

The NetBackup for Oracle extension supports ASM via stream-based backups because RMAN and the Oracle server processes read the contents and provide a stream of buffers to the SBT API.

Standard and Windows file system backups, including Snapshot client, are not supported because ASM is not POSIX compliant and cannot be read by the NetBackup bpbkar process nor written by the NetBackup tar process.

Overview of Automatic Storage Management (ASM)

Automatic Storage Management (ASM) is a new feature that has been introduced in Oracle 10g to simplify the storage of Oracle datafiles, controlfiles and logfiles.

Automatic Storage Management (ASM) simplifies administration of Oracle related files by allowing the administrator to reference disk groups rather than individual disks and files, which are managed by ASM. The ASM functionality is an extension of the Oracle Managed Files (OMF) functionality that also includes striping and mirroring to provide balanced and secure storage.
