Problem

Archiving items previously restored to the mailbox in Enterprise Vault (EV) for Microsoft Exchange

Solution

An item restored from EV will be re-archived when the item matches the archiving criteria in the future, i.e. if the archive period is set to archive in (6) months and the item remains unmodified for (6) months then the item will be archived. This method of archiving will avoid restored items from be retained in the Exchange store permanently and occupying space.

An item is not deleted from the archive when an the item is restored from EV. EV will track the restoration of an item so the item will not be stored in multiple locations on a storage device. If the item is later re-archived then one of the following can occur:

Modified Items:

An item will  be processed as a new item if the particular item has been modified in any way.

Unmodified Items:

EV will detect that a copy of the item is currently stored in the Vault so EV does NOT create a new copy of the item if the item has NOT been modified when the item is re-archived. EV simply deletes the item being archived from Exchange (to save space) then a shortcut is created pointing to the archived version of the item. Even if the item is restored, moved to a new location in the same mailbox and then archived again it, EV will not create a new copy of the item, the index will be updated and write a new entry for the new location. This means that the retention category cycle of the item remains unchanged.
Additional Info: If a mailbox of the user is completely exported to a PST file then all the items in the archive will remain in the archive as long as the retention period has NOT been reached. The items retain their original retention period and the items will NOT be updated with the PST recall operation time.
