Problem

In Veritas System Recovery 2013 R2 SP3, P2V conversion to ESXi host fails if the target ESXi host password contains ‘@’ character.

Error Message

Popup window at 0% of the conversion process:
Unable to create virtual disk. This could be due to one of the following reasons:
  • Target ESXi host password contains the ‘@’ character.
  • Destination path does not exist.
  • Insufficient disk space.
  • Invalid credential or permissions on destination path.
  • Network errors.

Cause

This issue is caused because of the VMWare VDDK 5.5 limitation. VMWare VDDK 5.5 is used by Symantec System Recovery for physical to virtual conversion.
In the VDDK 5.5 release notes, the Known Issues and Workarounds section contains the following information:
Clone function fails connection with at-sign in password.
If a user sets the access password to include at-sign (@) the VixDiskLib_Clone function will fail with “CnxAuthdConnect” or “NfcNewAuthdConnectionEx“ error. The issue is seen only when connecting directly to an ESXi host, and when the virtual machine's MoRef was not specified. This behavior is a regression from VDDK 5.1. The workaround is to set the root (or other login) password to avoid at-sign.
For more information, refer to the Known Issues and Workarounds section in the VDDK 5.5 release notes: https://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vddk/vddk-550-releasenotes.html

Note: This issue is not observed on an x86 platform as Symantec System Recovery 2013 R2 SP3 uses VDDK 5.1.

Solution

To resolve this issue, an ESXi host administrator can remove the ‘@’ character from the password or create a new user without using ‘@’ character in the password and continue with the P2V conversion.
