Problem

When attempting to add the Master server to the vCenter plugin it fails with "java.lang.Exception: Failed to communicate with server using supplied auth token. Error: java.lang.NullPointerException. Please verify that NetBackup Master Server name, port and auth token are valid", when bad certificates are provided.

Error Message

In the recoveryportal.log:

[http-9445-2] 24 Apr 2014 14:15:31 ERROR RecoveryPortal : Application threw exception
java.lang.Exception: Failed to communicate with server using supplied auth token. Error: java.lang.NullPointerException. Please verify that NetBackup Master Server name, port and auth token are valid
at com.symantec.nbu.recoveryplugin.controller.NetBackupMgr.validateServer(Unknown Source)

Cause

This issue occurs when a bad authentication token certificate has been provided to the vCenter Plugin.  For example if the zip file is extracted an provided to the vCenter plugin, that would cause this issue.  The vCenter plugin expects the zip file to be provided as the certificate.

Solution

Create a new authentication token following procedure to "Create an Authentication Token" on Page 40 of the "Veritas NetBackup™

Plug-in for VMware vCenter Guide".
