Cause

NOTE: In a Hyper-V environment this error can be caused by an application causing high disk I/O on the VM.

The errors above will appear in virtual machine backups when the VMware Tools are uninstalled and reinstalled on a guest, which in turn reinstalls the VMware Snapshot Provider.  When installing the Backup Exec Remote Agent on the guest,  the VMware Snapshot Provider is uninstalled (as both snapshot providers can not co-exist on a guest).  So when reinstalling and upgrading VMware Tools, be sure to de-select the "Volume Shadow Copy Service" under "VMware Device Drivers" during the VMware Tools installation/upgrade wizard to avoid these errors in the future.

Solution

NOTE:  These steps should be done on the guest machine or VM the backup is failing on
Confirm no backups are running of the guest machine giving the error then check the vss providers that are running.
  • Open a command prompt on the guest machine failing during backup
  • Type "vssadmin list providers" and press enter
  • If both the Backup Exec VSS Provider and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider are listed, follow the solution below

  • Run the "post-thaw-script.bat" from the VSS Provider directory in the Backup Exec install directory of the guest machine.

The default path is C:\Program Files\veritas\Backup Exec\RAWS\VSS Provider
          Reboot the guest machine.
