Restore BKF and tape from destroyed system.

I have a tape with a backup and a 3.5" HDD with with .BKF-files. I need to restore these on new a system running server 2008 and Backup Exec 2010. The system from which the backup originates is no more, there is no possible way to restart it. It also ran on Windows server 2003. I have inventoried and catalogued the tape. What credentials should I use on the restore job? I get access denied when I try an admin account from the new system. When it comes to the HDD I can run an inventory job but the option to catalogue is greyed out.

Read pkh's article below. While written for BE 2012 it MIGHT be relevant for BE 2010:

Make sure the credentials that you use has the rights according to this document

http://www.veritas.com/docs/000028683

For the B2D folder, after you have done the inventory job, you need to expand the B2D folder, right-click on each .bkf file and catalog it. BE 2010 does not have the ability to catalog the entire B2D folder.

If you had entered the correct encryption passphrase then the job will proceed. Otherwise you will be prompted for a passphrase until you cancel the job

I solved the tape backup thing. Apparently there was another credentials option under the "restore redirect" options which I missed the first time. About the B2D-folder: It's password protected and there are 400+ 1GB files which makes up the backup. When trying to catalog the first file I get the option to enter a password. I enter what I think the password is but when it starts I get an error saying that the key is missing from the system and tells me to add it under Tools > Encryption keys... "The encryption key required..." Shouldn't it be enough to enter the password when creating the catalogue job? Also I've noticed that when leaving the password blank I get the same error. Is there any way to tell if the password I've entered is correct?

But do I have to add the password as a key under Tools > Encryption key AND in the catalog prompt?

If the encryption passphrase is created correctly, then you would not be prompted for it

I don't understand. When right click a .bkf and chose catalog I get the catalog job prompt with a password field. Should I ignore that field and just create a key with the same name that the error windows asks for? When I enter a password in the catalog prompt I don't get a "wrong password" warning, only a "The encryption key required key:key1 is missing". Do I need to enter the password at two different places or does one override the other?

I don't know if this is your problem but if you previously ran Backup Exec 10D or earlier (and used Media Passwords) and then upgraded this installation to 11D or later  (and added data encryption settings) but did not recreate the backup jobs jobs then you can end up in a situation were a media password and an encryption key are both needed to catalog and acess the data.

Typicially the media password used to be asked for as a prompt against the catalog job, and the encryption key would then be an error afterwards (so similar to what you have described)

If you are in this state and do not have a copy of the original BEDB then you will need the Media Password and the Encryption Passphrase to do your restore.

Note: we discontinued Media paswords in 10D as we introduced encryption in 11D however upgraded jobs maintained the media password requirements if you did not recreate them.
