BackupExec VRAY

Is it recommended to run a BE 2012 installation virtual on a VMWare platform?

I have plans to backup all VMDK files on the hypervisor using DeDupe feature to a diskstore that is shared with the produktion store.

The entire produktion/store (array) will then be replicated to another store on a second location. Together with all VMs, including the BE installation and BE disktore.

Is this supported, or should i run BackupExec on a physcial server with two different diskstore and include duplicattion to have a second copy of the backed data?

Regards

/Peter

Hi Peter,

No, Symantec don't recommend this based mainly on the SCSI pass-through issue when connecting to tape drives. In the environment I used to look after, this was done for 1 of the clients I used to look after. I didn't recommend it, and while it did work, when it broke it took a couple of hours to fix. If backing up to tape, use a physical server!

Dedupe & B2D folders, on the other hand, shouldn't be an issue. No SCSI pass-through here. First prize will always be a physical server, especially from a support basis. But if you start off with a VM for now, it should be fine. The rest of what you describe is standard configuration to replicate a dedupe folder.

Thanks!

You should read Colin Weaver's comment in this discussion, in particular the part about running an alternative configuration.

Another negative about running a virtualised media server is that the dedup option uses a lot of CPU and memory and the VM might not cope.
