Indiana Storage & Backup User Group Minutes from May 13, 2014

The seventeenth meeting of the Indiana Backup & Archiving User Group was held on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Franciscan Alliance Information Systems in Beech Grove, IN.  Five individuals attended in person, representing three distinct customer organizations, as well as Symantec.

Those in attendance:

Brian Doyle

            Ray English

            Mark Valleca

            Mark Capshaw

            Dave Paulson

The meeting began at 12:00 noon, with lunch catered by Panera.  At 12:30, we got down to business, with Mark Valleca going through several presentations highlighting important information either from or about the recently-concluded Symantec VISION conference in Las Vegas, NV

The first presentation included interesting information on the demographics of this year’s VISION attendees, whose numbers seemed to be roughly on par with last year, or possibly slightly up, but certainly not the best-attended VISION conference in the recent past.  Mark also touched on the implications for Symantec’s future directions, given the recent change in the top leadership of the company.

At 12:55, attention shifted to another VISION presentation: an overview of Future Directions for NetBackup.  Highlights include:

  • Support for multi-tenancy
  • More granular access controls
  • Support for heterogeneous environments utilizing multiple hypervisors
  • Security
  • Improvements to granular file and folder restores for VMs
  • Increasing operational efficiencies, especially in the areas of Upgrades, Support, and managing backups
  • NBU currently integrates management of NetApp filer snapshots, and similar functionality is on the roadmap for EMC arrays

The Final presentation included a brief overview of Future Directions for NetBackup Appliances.  Highlights include:

  • Better Diagnotics and call-home support
  • Better Deduplication performance
  • Ability to expand to 144 TB capacity

The remainder of the meeting agenda focused on two presentations from Brian Doyle and Dave Paulson, demonstrating their respective approaches to growth forecasting in their NetBackup environments.

The meeting concluded with the awarding of Symantec Connect points.  Since attendance was so low, there was no drawing.  Instead, the points and prizes were allotted as follows:

200 points for Hosting: Mark Capshaw

300 points for presenting, split equally between

Brian Doyle and Dave Paulson (150 each)

Drawing #1 for 100 Points: Brian Doyle

Drawing #2 for 125 Points: Dave Paulson

Drawing #3 for 150 Points: Ray English

Symantec HeadPhones: Mark Capshaw

IPad Case: Brian Doyle

The meeting adjourned at 3:00.

Respectfully submitted,

Dave Paulson, Secretary
