Exec Summary

The latest iteration of Backup Exec can restore a single email message, or single mailbox, or restore from a specific point in time—without time-consuming brick-level backups.

A previous TechTip described how the Active Directory agent of Symantec Backup Exec 11d can recover individual Active Directory user accounts and objects without taking the domain controller offline or restoring the entire Active Directory database. (Read it)

There's similar good news for Microsoft Exchange Server. Try asking your IT help desk to restore a single message or mailbox. The usual response is, "Whoa! I can't overwrite the entire Exchange database just to restore one email. You're out of luck."

But if your IT department does backups using the Microsoft Exchange agent for Backup Exec 11d, the answer will probably be, "No problem. You'll have it back in your mailbox in less than 5 minutes."

GRT=Granular Recovery Technology

The secret is Granular Recovery Technology (GRT). The same technology that is used to recover individual Active Directory user accounts and objects from a single-pass backup is also available for Microsoft Exchange Server 2000, 2003, 2007, Microsoft SharePoint Server 2003 and 2007, and Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 and 3.0.

With Symantec Backup Exec 11d GRT-enabled backups, individual Exchange mailboxes, messages, and public or private folders are always backed up with the Exchange databases—in a single pass. No more separate and slow brick-level individual mailbox backups of Exchange that take hours upon hours to complete and use additional backup media or disk space. You just perform your normal fast database-level backups of Exchange and automatically get the added benefit of highly granular recovery. It's the best of both worlds: You can back up big things, like Exchange databases, very fast but still restore the small things you need, including individual Exchange:

  • Mailboxes
  • Messages
  • Contacts
  • Calendar items
  • Journal entries
  • Tasks
  • Public or private folder data

Continuous protection for Exchange

The Exchange Agent GRT technology can be configured to work in conjunction with the new Backup Exec 11d Continuous Protection for Exchange feature that is also included with the Backup Exec 11d Exchange Agent. The Continuous Protection feature replicates Exchange transaction logs to the Backup Exec server and consolidates them automatically into "recovery points" at intervals from every 15 minutes to every 8 hours. In addition to recovering individual Exchange items listed above, you can recover the entire Exchange database to an exact point in time using these "recovery points."

In order to restore the single email, do I need to unmount the database?

Or restart the Exchange server? Or services?

Thank you
