Environment

Veritas Netbackup version = 7.1

Operating System of Veritas Netbackup Server = win2003

Primary Site Netbackup Server name = abc

Secondary Site Netbackup Server name = xyz (high configuration than Primary Site Netbackup Server)

Tape Drive and Tape Cartridges are same on both Veritas Netbackup Server's

Agenda

Want to Restore Backup Images on an alternate NBU Server as quick as possible. Two hurdles which leads me to use the Recovery without Import procedure.

1.) I want to do a 'Recovery without Import' method because My Primary Site Netbackup Server and Secondary Site Netbackup Server have different hostnames( thats why I am not able to restore the Catalog from Primary Site NBU to Secondary Site NBU )

2.) The procedure which is "Two Phase Import"( see the below link for that procedure ), the Tape Cartridges of Primary Site Netbackup Server is taking much time to be imported to Secondary Site Netbackup Server. So I thought to do a 'Recovery without Import' method.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH43584

Through the Recovery without Import procedure the both import Phases got skipped

Two circumstances can be faced under this procedure

1.) The image files may not creating at the correct location which is usually ...<install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\\images\client-name\10-digit-datestamp\XXX_131787....

2.) The images are creating at this location  under ...<install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\\images\client-name\

The above both points depend on the entry of file name IDIRSTRUCT. Means

The default value of the file name IDIRSTRUCT is 2 which is under Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\db folder. With this value in place, all Netbackup image information (header files, data files etc) will be written to the following paths:

On Windows:
<install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<client_name>\<ctime>

SO,

If the IDIRSTRUCT file is deleted, NetBackup will recreate this file with a value of 1; which is a change from the default value of 2.  This will result in the following behavior:

All new NetBackup image information (header files, data files etc) will be written directly under the the following paths:
On Windows:

<install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<client_name>\

So in the below activity we will perform as per the point # 1 and if anyone is interested in the Point # 2 they may follow the below links

http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/products/White_P...

http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/enterprise/white...

Activity

We will perform the Activity as per the below points:

  • First we verify that what 10 digit time stamp is on the folder which you have to copy from the Primary Site Veritas Netbackup Server to the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server.
  • Create the correct 10 digit time stamp folder as per the above verification at the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server..
  • Copy the correct time stamp files from <install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<client_name>\ from Primary Site Veritas Netbackup Server and paste to the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server ( on the same location means the 10 digit time stamp folder created above at the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server).
  • Create a catstore folder under <install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<client_name>\ at the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server
  • Copy the correct time stamp files from <install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<client_name>\catstore from Primary Site Veritas Netbackup Server and paste to the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server( on the same location means at catstore on the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server ).
  • Fill/add the entry of FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER entry under the below path:
Host Properties -> Master -> General Server. Specify original and new media server under Media Host Override.
  • Restart the Server Service from the Administrative Tools
  • Start Restore
  • Some good links

""First we verify that what 10 digit time stamp is on the folder which you have to copy from the Primary Site Veritas Netbackup Server to the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server.""

At the Primary Site Netbackup Server under the Catalog select your Media under Media ID and select the specific date which's images you want to restore from Primary Site to Secondary Site NBU ( filter more as per your requirenment ) and then click on Search Now. See the below snap for reference:

Now when you are able to see the images note down which series of time-stamp your images have. In our scenerio we have the 1322.... series. Now verify that the folder name 1322000000 is correct. Open the cmd and run the below command.

bpdbm -ctime 1322000000

C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin>bpdbm.exe -ctime 1322000000
1322000000 = Wed Nov 23 03:13:20 2011

Now you can see that the time started before your images mention in the Catalog means they all will be under the correct folder name which we have chosen. We can also verify another image file time-stamp. See the below for your reference:

C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin>bpdbm.exe -ctime 1322634546
1322634546 = Wed Nov 30 11:29:06 2011

In the above exercise we confirmed that no image goes outside from 1322........

""Create the correct 10 digit time stamp folder as per the above verification at the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server""

Now its the time to create the folder name 1322000000 at the Secondary Site Netbackup Server.

""Copy the correct time stamp files from <install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<client_name>\ from Primary Site Veritas Netbackup Server and paste to the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server ( on the same location means the 10 digit time stamp folder created above at the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server).""

In this step we copy all image files started with 1322 from the Primary Site Netbackup Server and paste it to the Secondary Site Netbackup Server. If you are trying to restore(at Secondary Site) the latest images and willing to copy(From Primary Site) the most current images you make sure that no backup job is running.

Note: If you zip/compress the image files, the size will decrease enough. I compressed my image files via 7zip software and the size decrease from 1GB to 33.6 MB (In my case I dont have a good link between Primary Site and Secondary Site)

""Create a catstore folder under <install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<client_name>\ at the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server""

Create a catstore folder under <install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<client_name>\ at the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server

""Copy the correct time stamp files from <install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<client_name>\catstore from Primary Site Veritas Netbackup Server and paste to the Secondary Site Veritas Netbackup Server( on the same location means at catstore on the Secondary Site VeritasNetbackup Server ).""

In this point we copy all files started with 1322 from the Primary Site Netbackup Server from <install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\<client_name>\catstore and paste it to the Secondary Site Netbackup Server under the same path.

""Fill/Add the entry of FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER entry under the below path:""

Add the Primary and Secondary Site Netbackup Server names under Host Properties -> Master -> General Server. Specify original and new media server under Media Host Override.

""Restart the Server Service from the Administrative Tools""

You will need to restart the Server Service from the Administrative tools as when you start restore ( at the Secondary Site NBU Server ) you may face the below Warning in Detail Status under Activity Monitor

1/3/2012 3:20:30 PM - Info bptm(pid=3336) A00033

""Start Restore""

Now you can start Restore

I did not try this at NBU 7.5 version. Make a test lab on VM and try to this if possible kindly , and share the result with us as well :) ... I think it depends on NBU 7.5 architecture
