Recently, Symantec commissioned 451 Research to take a good hard look at Backup Exec's philosophy of and strategy toward protecting heterogenous environments.

From the intro:

The 451 Take
Though VM-specific vendors have made a mark in the backup and recovery sector with software designed for backing up virtual environments, we think that a number of trends may shift the market in favor of firms that can provide data protection for both physical and virtual environments, as well as a broad range of applications, operating systems and hypervisors. This is in large part because IT organizations have a greater need than ever to decrease the number of backup applications that have proliferated across most enterprises in a bid to cut costs and complexity.

In this regard, Symantec's pending Service Pack releases of Backup Exec 2010 and 2012 will further strengthen its position. Our long-term view is that IT departments will consolidate to fewer backup platforms as they take a more strategic view of data protection, but the market will remain extremely competitive as smaller players such as Veeam tackle this from the other side by expanding their own platform support.
